The Worldly Life in the Holy Quran: A Semantic Study

Signification, worldly life, enjoyment, play and amusement, Quranic contextAbstract
The research comprises an introduction, three sections, and a conclusion. The introduction outlines the rationale for selecting this topic, the significance and characteristics of worldly life within the Quranic context, and the various images used to portray it. Each of the three sections addresses one of the three specific depictions of worldly life found in the Holy Quran.
The first depiction is represented by the term *matā‘* (provision/fleeting enjoyment), which characterizes worldly life. This term appears eleven times in the Holy Quran across various contexts—such as in the Almighty’s saying: "This worldly life is but a [fleeting] provision" (Surah Ghafir: 39). The second representation appears in the terms *la‘b* (play) and *lahw* (diversion); the worldly life is depicted in the Holy Quran as "play and diversion" on four occasions, employing a consistent stylistic pattern: restriction through negation and exception twice, and restriction using the particle *innama* twice
